Please select one of the following three options. Do a close reading of the assigned pages using the techniques discussed in earlier workshop sessions. After annotating the appropriate data, please answer the following questions in a concise essay. You should use a web graphic organizer to order the data before you begin to write. The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World by F.A. Bartholdi

1) Historical Focus (pages 11-18): What was the French-American Union? Why did it promote the creation of the Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World? For the members of the Union, what did the Statue symbolize? How does their vision of the Statue differ from later interpretations?
2) Artistic Focus (pages 33-43): Why did Bartholdi design the Statue the way he did? What is colossal statuary? How had it been used by previous civilizations? What kinds of messages did such art convey? According to Bartholdi, what are the three principles of colossal art?
3) Engineering/Design Focus (pages 43-52): What was the procedure Bartholdi used to create the Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World? How did he change the dimensions of the preliminary model to those of the final statue? How were the pieces of the final statue made? What role did Gustave Eiffel play in the creation of the Statue? What was his solution to the problems associated with designing such a large statue?
